to reject the past as entirely insignificant is foolosh as the future is pitch black and untold, the only clues lie in our past. the only way to attempt to make sense of the present is through connections to what we already have experienced. without the ability to recollect our past joys and pains it is impossible to fathom why we react to anything. some people refuse to acknowledge past lovers and friends citing 'the past is the past'. these are the people who continue to repeat their mistakes seemingly with no idea why they feel any emotion. every mannerism, emotion, idea, ideal, EVERYTHING that we are is shaped by our past experiences. but to live in the past is cowardly and unrealistic also. this is an inability to accept loss maybe and a fear of the unknown, by clinging tightly to romanticised ideals of what was we hope to defend ourselves against any future pain - only to be dragged kicking and screaming into our futures, rejecting the beauty of the unknown. we have no choice in acceptin whats lost is lost as time is the one thing which can be relied upon to continue taking us unrelentingly forwards (time is ONLY linear). even when lovers, jobs, figures, holidays can be returned to that joy we are hoping for will never be RE-captured. it is gone and all that is left are the marks left on us indelibly. the only way that i can see to live is to love and embrace the past as reference materials, our only weapons to deal with everything tomorrow brings us, but not shields to cower behind, nor worthless trivia to be discarded. if your past is all that you are, your future is all that you can be.
